Zines @ Bates

What are zines?

A zine is usually a short self-published, self-distributed booklet, short for magazine.

These are usually made by hand, on pieces of paper that can be easily photocopied and distributed. Before the internet, these were important ways to get information, personal stories, recipes, essays and other writing out to readers outside of the traditional publishing system. Since the internet, there is also a large culture of webzines and zines published online, too.

Zines have also been an important method for underground organizing, DIY punk culture, resistance movements, queer and feminist cultures, among many, many others, to get ideas and thoughts out to different audiences. Often ideas that were or are considered taboo or outside of the mainstream of their time were explored in zines. These are therefore important research tools to explore critical and alternative perspectives.
