Information for the Bates College community on topics in Scholarly Communications including: open access, author's rights, copyright, and more.

Pathways to Open at Bates

Pathways to Open RoadmapThere are several ways to make your scholarship available openly as a Bates College affiliated author.

You can publish your work OA with the support of grant funding, connect with the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance for support. You can also choose a "Diamond OA" journal that doesn't charge authors Article Processing charges.

You can work with a publisher with whom our library network has signed a "Read and Publish" agreement. These agreements allow our authors to publish OA with all Article Processing Charges waived.

You can deposit your accepted manuscript of a published work in our institutional repository, SCARAB, even if the published version was not open access.

SCARAB is our Institutional Repository at Bates College. It contains faculty scholarship, student theses, college archival material (including the college newspaper "The Bates Student"), conference proceedings and more! Take a look at our SCARAB page for more information and resources!

Read and Publish with Cambridge University Press

Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin have an agreement with Cambridge University Press. The agreement provides access to Cambridge journals and unlimited coverage of Article Processing Charges (APCs) to our authors who publish open access in Gold OA or Hybrid OA Cambridge journals.

The agreement term runs through 2024.
