#VanguardSTEM ... is a live, monthly web-series featuring a rotating panel of women of color in STEM discussing a wide variety of topics including their research interests, wisdom, advice, tips, tricks and commentary on current events. This web-series, and the online platform it spurred, is a signature program of The SeRCH Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit organization dedicated to using science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as a tool for social justice. To move the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) forward, it's crucial that there is more diversity, which means the inclusion of those who have been historically marginalized from working in these fields. The first ABRCMS hosted by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) in 2001, was founded to encourage minority, first-generation, veteran, and disabled students to pursue higher education in STEM.
Students attend this conference to present their research, enhance professional development skills, explore graduate schools, and network. Research faculty and program directors play an essential role in mentoring students and learning strategies for facilitating student success. [From Website.]

"Hidden Physicists" are people with a physics background, but without a typical physics job. Nearly 90% of all physicists are hidden physicists. In 2019, Kamuela Yong and Rebecca Garcia organized the first “Pacific Islanders in Mathematics” session at the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) conference held in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. This session was, to our knowledge, the first event with the sole intent to bring together Pacific Islander mathematicians. Afterwards, plans were laid for the creation of a more formal organization for Pacific Islanders in mathematics. However, these were waylaid largely due to the impact of the 2020 global COVID-19 pandemic and its far-reaching effects on academia and educational institutions. It was also decided to expand from Pacific Islanders in mathematics to all Indigenous People in mathematics. [From Website]

Our aim in assembling these names is to put an end to the harmful myth that there are not enough diverse scientists to give seminars, serve as panelists, or fill scientific positions. Lathisms (Latinx and Hispanics in the Mathematical Sciences) was founded in 2016 with the mission of showcasing the contributions of Latinx and Hispanic mathematicians during Hispanic Heritage Month (from September 15 to October 15). Our goal is to provide an accessible platform that features the multifaceted and diverse nature of the Latinx and Hispanic mathematics community and inspires the younger generation of Latinx mathematicians. MATHAD is dedicated to promoting and highlighting the contributions of members of the African diaspora to mathematics, especially contributions to current mathematical research.

In December 2016, Erica Graham, Raegan Higgins, Shelby Wilson, and I, Candice Price, had a conference call discussing the creation of a website that would highlight the contributions and lives of Black mathematicians. Inspired by the work of Lathisms and emboldened by the film Hidden Figures, they created the website “Mathematically Gifted and Black”. The name not only pays homage to the song so well known and loved within the Black community but is itself a tribute to those whose story may never have been told.

We are excited to spotlight 28 Black Mathematicians every February and to share their stories with you. You may see familiar or unknown faces, and we hope you learn something new. [From Website]

STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) have been traditionally thought of as heterosexual, masculine fields and the thought of this can be quite intimidating for those just starting out in the field who don’t fit this mold. This project showcases LGBT people in the STEM fields, showing the diversity of people that can be found in roles all across the STEM disciplines and hopefully providing some role models for people who are either at a junior stage in their careers, or who are only currently considering the possibility of going into a STEM field.
